Dialog Unlimited Mobile Broadband (HSDPA) vs Mobitel M3 Broadband

some times speedtest.net go nuts and show incorrect results, best to test it few times and get the average, once i got 30mbps on M3 😀

so test it few, time with few deferent servers, not just one.

  • @mah

there has been some issues with speedtest.net for the past few days, see the comment 350, showing 18mbps on Dialog HSDPA, this is due to some error on the Male server on speedtest.net, so ignore thoes results, do some test for USA/NY and UK that will give you some accurate results.

even i got 30mbps on my M3 yesterday, but if you do a file download from a site it was less then 512kbps.

about your comments, they have gone to the SPAM trap, i dont check the spam trap i just delete it with out checking. sorry about that, even the last comment was on the SPAM.

    @ kalinga
    thanks.
2 of my friends using those connections. i used 3.6mb one quite a bit of time and speedtests to US and UK servers were also more than 2.4mb several times. download speed appeared on the bar was also very good. i did it at colombo 7 and i may get a chance to use it at maharagama soon. i ll publish those results also.

with 7.2mb connection just did a speedtest only. so cant comment much about that and it will be converted to 3.6mb connection soon.

  • @mah

good to know but I’m having issues with M3, (during the night time) and Mobitel Eng are checking to the matter, few of my friends has the same issue but not sure why… for some people the connection seem to work well.

  • mah

    @ kalinga
i did that during day time. (around 4pm)
my smart connection also i usually use during day time as i have ADSL at home. day time smart also good and gives 1mb speed. M3 will face problems as they sell large number of connections these days in addition to smart users. so they have to upgrade the network i think.

  • Jeevan

    Hello, Mr.Kalinga
I am new to this blog. I have to ask a question from you, And I am very sorry that this question does not belong to this blog.
My son just finished his O/L exams. He wants to go in IT stream. I don’t know, what to do next. I have tried some computer institutions, they said that they are starting from basic level and for a fee of 11 000/= up. As you know, can you give me any ideas? Please.

  • @Jeevan

first of all ask what your son like to do, networking, programing, 2nd get him to use the computer and let hims mess with it 😀 make sure he’s not scared of the computer, this is a basic mistake parents do, that don’t let the kids to mess with the computer saying its 2 expensive, don’t do that, softwares cant brake the computer, get him some good books, reading is the best, get English books, related to OS (Operating Systems) and other applications, make it more fun for him, then send him to basic programing classes, there are quite a few, see if there are any classes that teach DOS, C++, thats the best place to start, then get him to use Linux. again get him books related to that, that Dummy series of book are good for starting, you can find them at expograpics (_http://www.expo-graphic.com/)

there are not classes that will teach him all, they will only get him to the track, he need to read and learn things him self, thats the best way.

I’m not sure what knowlage level he’s in with computer, if you need more help, my email is there on the about page, drop me an email, will help in anyway i can.

  • @sanjan

well, i think people are just making a big fuzz about Airtl, don’t think it will be much deference from any other provider, also there wont be any BIG price deferences as well, since all trafis are regulated by the TRC and they don’t allow any provider to have an edge on this matter.

Airtel yet to publish there price plans, people are just making a BIG fuzz and few fake emails are going around promoting with fake call charges.

    http://www.trc.gov.lk/mobile_tariff.htm

only good thing is people have more choice and good competition.

    Hi all,
this is the complaint i sent to dialog,

My problem is the connection speed is hopeless now. It never exceeds, 10KB/s when downloading. I cant even browse the internet.
I understand that even though you said its 7.2MBPS. You dont have an international bandwidth to provide that speed.
I know that you can never go upto 7.2MBPS but I would still be happy if you could provide at least 1MBPS speed without fooling the customers.

The limitations you have covered by a silly term “FUP” is also due to lack of good international bandwidth, if that is the case why do you charge 100 rupees daily and let the customers overcome the FUP???

Please Try to increase your international bandwidth and try to provide a good quality service for the money you are earning from the customers. Otherwise it will be impossible to avoid customer dissatisfaction and you will loose your customers.

    Thank you.

  • @Nadun

There will not much Dialog do about this, as it seems there are not bothered about keeping customers, even them self is saying “if your not happy with the service, switch to another provider” this was bit hard before as only Mobitel was there and Dialog has a BIG monopoly in the market but now its not the case, now you get Mobitel, Airtel and soon another company.

i have been trying to show Dialog guys there is some thing wrong for quite some time but there 2 hard headed and didn’t even bother to check on the matter.

its not only Dialog’s International bandwidth, its there Interconectvity, meaning, tower to there based station connectivity, even tho there tower can support 7.2mbps, tower and based station (main switching station) is interconnected with a 2mbps link, so voice, data and there control signals use the same 2mbps, so you can imagine the speeds users get!

Dialog is a sinking ship, when it comes to customer service! even with in Dialog engineering, they are more in to the passing the ball then trying to find the issue.

this is why there TV and Internet service is loosing money! as they suck at technical support.

  • Nadun Rubasinghe

Hi all, now i am sick with this dialog 3G Broad band connection. But due to unavoidable reasons, i can’t use my home ADSL (SLT) all the time.

Therefore i need a mobile internet connection. I heard mobitel one is also not far superior to dialog.

will there be any new ISP/s? what abt Airtel?

for my purposes (mobile Broad band) any suggestions. ?

  • @Nadun Rubasinghe

i was a Dialog user for some time, before i used M3, with Dialog HSDPA i had so many issue from Speed, Billing, and there service sucks specially technical support.

so on dec 26th, i switched back to Mobitel, and I’m happy with there service so far, speed are not bad, if your in Colombo, its around 2mbps 90% of the time more then 1.5mbps, but if you go out of Colombo its from 800kbps to 2mbps, but the connection is stable.

anyway who’s using Dialog, all I’m saying is, stay away from there internet services, as it SUCKS big time.

also I’m not keeping any High hopes about Airtel as there main focus is voice, not data, but there network is HSDPA. for now there ISP is Lankacom, not a good choice and i had issue when Mobitel was using Lankacom before. all im saying is give Airtel some time, once users load there system, it will be same as any other telco.

as far as i see, Airtel is using people to spreed fake call prices etc, to make a BIG fuzz among people. but after 12th every one can see, its the same as Dialog, Mobitel, Hutch or Tigo.

  • Rasike

their tariff seems very Eye Candy like neda, 7.2Mbps reminds me of the fiasco we had with dialog, may be that 3.6Mbps will practicable, its good if someone let us know their experience after they switch, even though my M3 2Gb is not up to my taste im really not in the mood to switch to a wholly unknown Provider, anyway i hope this competitive tariff plan will poke the other networks in to updating their price plans as well, in the end it will be good for the Sri Lankan BB users.

  • Rasike

Airtel has removed their tariff plans from their website (as at 7.30am 14/01/09), now there is a msg saying to visit one of their showrooms to see a suitable plan, but the seperate link above is working anyway, it seems theses ppl think that us Sri Lankans are ppl who dont use internet and only do stuff in the old fashion way. y dont they want us to see their tariff plans in advance?? what do they have they to hide? they too seems to have copied a few tricks from dialog.

  • Sannaddha

    Binduka,
Oya spreadsheet eka upload kalee mama!
Although it was published by Airtel,It has lot of mistakes…
According to unofficial details there new rate is 1cnt Per KB.
    thats not something we expected!
But there data packages are attractive!
Specially the 3.2mbps unlimited one for 1499Rs.
But according to latest news they’ll not offer data packages until 1st week of march 🙁

  • @Sannaddha

Airtel only have HSPA in selected city’s, and they still DONT have a good international connectivity, there connectivity is around 5mbps (according to my sources) from Lankacom.

don’t think Airtel will be better then Mobitel, but I’m sure it will be better then Dialog 😀 the way Dialog HSDPA is going.

still i don’t recommend Airtel, we need to give it some time and once users start use there service and when user numbers grow, we can really see the network proformance.

scan copy of the price plan can be found here

    http://www.kalingasblog.com/airtel/callcharges.jpg

  • Rasike

yeah i agree with kalinga aiya, for ppl who can keep 2 separate connections together it would be nice to test the Airtel Networks performance, bcos if its not up to standard we can always switch back, but for 1st time users, jumping in to Airtel wont be good, the other networks are already worried, just for today (14th) Mobitel is giving out free local video calls.

  • Rishoban

But, I think a true unlimited without any FUP limits, for just Rs.1499/= will make a new sensation in sri lankan broadband history!
Dialog and mobitel are now crtical state of changing their tariff. It’s chepaer than SLT ADSL, it is enough if it can only 512Kbps atleast like SLT. It costs only 1950/= per month (with all VAT,MSL,ECL). Broadband services from Airtel starts from 16th January 2009, I will definitely change into Airtel, when I get coverage.
I sent a email asking about prices and coverage, They replied within hours!!

    @Sannaddha
    ඔයත් කරන දේවල් 🙂
    ඔය 1499 unlimited package එක ඇත්තටම unlimited ද කියල කවුරැවත් දන්නවද? FUP එකක් නම් මම තාම දැක්කෙ නෑ.

  • mah

    @kalinga
system not allowed to post all speedtests at once. so i posted them seperately.
as you said at 9pm to 10pm speeds are less. but its not that bad for me luckily!

  • Rishoban

    @Binduka

10000000% sure, its true unlimited. No any FUP.
I called 075 5 555 555, they confirmed that there are no FUPs! And check elekiri.com you can find more about that. Someone from EK have told that he asked from airtel agents about FUP and they have said that there is no FUP limits.

  • Lakmal

    @Rishoban,
Did you try out Airtel broadband ?
What is the guarantee that you get a High quality product from them ?
From the experience we have with the products in the market, anybody who provides an unlimited package on broadband will suffer definitely very soon. Best example is Dialog’s saking HSDPA and Mobitel super HSDPA. Main reason is Mobitel didn’t offer unlimited, they maintain the quality. I hope Airtel will sak too, as Dialog did.

  • Rishoban

    @Lakmal
I haven’t used Airtel, but, I think they will offer a good service. Dialog created an unlimited package to compete with Mobitel, But, it ended in a failure! And Dialog haven’t got a good internet backbone, that’s why they limits such as FUP, I think you can remember dialog once had a FUP limit of 30GB for its Previous WiMAX packages. In the Airtel’s case they have well planned Tariff system. I can Gurrantee that Airtel offer a good quality and high speed connection in India! Think of this, they have mentioned in their tariff that they give 7.2Mbps for all Limited packages, but only 3.2Mbps for the unlimited one. I don’t know that they will offer promised speed, but, I think it will be comparatively higher than Mobitel. In India an ISP like Dialog can’t lie to its customers, So, the Airtel! So, I think Airtel, will not lie. But, I still don’t recommend airtel and I do not gurrantee their service quality. I will try my best to prove Airtel’s service and I will post in this blog whenever I get a evidence, So, stay tuned to Kalinga’s Blog! Ha..Ha…Ha..!

  • Nadun

some body has spoken about the fair user policy of dialog. I want to add few more words to that.

Dialog’s FUP is simply due to their inadequacy of bandwidth, nothing else.
Their fair use policy is unfair when it comes to the ability to over come that limitation by paying another sum of money. If they REALLY want to have a fair user policy, they shouldn’t have offered, the option of paying some additional money and over coming the limits.

From the begining i knew that this will never be 7.2Mbps, but i expected at least 512Kbps stable connection.

Dialog is continuously taking an unsuccessful attempt to fool the users.
Their so called customer care service personnels dont know even the meaning of bandwidth. I hardly believe that any of them will have at least the basic knowledge in IT.

This type of cheating should be punished by laws of the government. Unfortunately that will never happen.

If you compare SL with other countries, you will realise our internet services (in that case so many other things as well) are way below the standards of many countries.

Peoples’ unawareness and neglegent attitudes also matter a lot in these situations…

  • Pradeepa

    Hey Guys,

I just visited the Airtel Store, And checked with the prices.

(Only available at Kollpetty and Narahenpita stores)

    Here is the info

    HSDPA Modem(Unfortunately Subscriber Locked) = 9500 Rs

    Data Connection(SIM) = 500 Rs

And the packages are similar to the once diplayed uploaded PDF (300Rs – 1GB Free, 600Rs – 3GB Free, 1499Rs – Unlimited).

My plan is to buy a SIM and use it with my M3 modem. Does anyone know whether M3 modem is also subscriber locked?

  • Nalin Madarasinghe

I have a huawei data device from Mobitel. It suits me as I am constantly travelling as a sales executive and meets my bandwidth requirement. When I visited the Mobitel branch to see what’s on offer, what I liked was they had different packages. I chose what I want.

I don’t know about Airtel. perhaps good, wait and see what friends say, don’t want to rush into things without knowing. The thing is Airtel too need to borrow bandwith from SLT I guess. they will be bit slow? Am I right? I am not a techie. Dialog broadband my father has, but he keeps complaining its very slow. We have an SLT connection at work. Guys watch song videos at work lol..so streaming good I think!

  • Rasike
