Dialog Unlimited Mobile Broadband (HSDPA) vs Mobitel M3 Broadband

I was about to ask that question, If my cancel my subscription with dialog, will they take my modem too?, if not, what should i do to use it with another ISP?

  • @Rishoban if you have not gone with an agreement with them and paid the full amount of the modem, yeah you can keep it, but if your with the Rs.5490 package your with a 6 month contract with them, so you cant disconnect it with out payment.

if your going to use it with a another ISP, your options are limited, only Mobitel is there, sill you have to get your modem unlocked.

    here’s a another speed test done Oct, 07 2008, @10:20PM

speed seem to be improved to Europe and Asia, but still it sucks to USA, slow as Dialup 🙁
seems there is a big issue in Dialog’s route to USA, this is why people are seeing slow speed since most of the content are coming from USA. (web sites) and upload still sucks at dialup speeds.

  • yeah, issue is definitely there proxy/cache server, since if you use a good open proxy that don’t run on port 80 or 8080 you can see a big deference in speeds and performance.

i have made a complain with dialog still no response from them.

  • Dialog 7.2mbps HDSPA Mobile Broadband vs SLT 2mbps ADSL

    Dialog 7.2mbps |——————————————————| 2mbps SLT ADSL

Dialog HSDPA Speed Test SLT 2mbps ADSL Speed Test

you can clearly see that Dialog dont even have 1mbps as they claim its 7.2mbps but even tho SLT is just 2mbps you can get more then 1.5mbps 75% of the advertised speed.

  • sanjan

thank you for the information you are publishing here. dont you have similer speed tests of m3 , 3.6 mbps? i m scared to buy that after knowing the way dialog cheats it s customers.

  • Sandun

    Great blog Kalinga!! good job.
is that my Nokia N82 can hit more than 1mbps with dialog HSPA?? my phone supports upto 3.6mbps. hope that dialog SIM can use with any HSPA device(dedicated modem or a with a phone which support HSPA)

  • @Sandun, if the phone support HSPA, then you can use the Dialog Unlimited Mobile Broadband SIM with the phone, or you can get Dialog Unlimited Mobile Broadband activated even on a existing voice line.

FYI: non topic related URL, so had to remove it.

  • Sandun

    Thanks Kalinga.
If this Dialog HSPA can view a youtube video with out buffering for 3,4 secs i will probably buy this without any issue.5GB is enough for me while i have ADSL also.Only issue is i will not buy a modem, as i already have a HSPA support phone.

  • @Sandun, well, to watch a low resolution youtube video, you don’t need HSDPA, even on 3G (UTMS) its works, but that’s not the case with Dialog, even if you have HSDPA youtube don’t work, the speeds comes and goes and its not stables.

if you have a Dialog connection, your already HSDPA activated, so you can just check your self before buying the SIM.

  • Rishoban

But, for me youtube works fine with my HSDPA, when buffering I get a speed of 380KB/s, and I live near a 3G tower. (I mean 3G tower, not 3G broadband tower), According to that I can say they offer promised speed, (384KB/s), Wait, I will go to colombo in this weekend, if I didn’t get my promised speed, I will call dialog from there or I will straightly visit Dialog Telekom.

  • @Rishoban, first of all there is no such thing as a “3G broadband tower” both Mobile Broadband and Mobile Phone (Voice) network use the same towers and same network, only deference can be the tower can be either 3G (UMTS) or 3.5G (HSDPA).

Unlimited Mobile Broadband is just a another mobile phone connection (package), that comes with out voice, if you wish you can even get one with voice.

also don’t get confused with KB/s and kb/s

    380KB/s = 3040kbps (2.9mbps), on 3G UMTS network you get 380kb/s

    @Sandun

FYI: Even though your phone capable of downloading file at a speed of 3.6Mbps, you can’t get that maximum transfer rate for your pc or notebook when it is used as a modem…….

For e.g. Nokia N95 supports HSDPA upto 3.6Mbps download rate.. but if you connect the phone through the data cable u cn get a maximum speed of nearly 450Kbps or 900Kbps (depending on the max baud rate supported by your phone cable driver..look at Modem properties in Device manager).. If the phone is connected through bluetooth this maximum allowed baud rate is very low.. nearly 128Kbps…

But you dont get any kind of limitations when u used a HSPA Modem….

  • @Rishoban, your comments don’t really make seance now 🙁 if your getting 2.9mbps why your youtube videos buffer ? youtube only need around 512kbps, but your saying your getting 2.9mbps (2969.6kbps) and still your youtube vidoes don’t work ? :-~

can you just do some speed test and show us the results ?

  • sam

I think these dialog people are faking us all times. I also bought a dialog broadband and i used only 3 days speed reduced to 0-25 kbps. but software indicated totally 4 GB (up & down) of usage. Customer care said I already exceeded my 5 GB limit or may be 6 GB limit. they don’t provide even a proper monitoring system of usage. But putting connection speed is clearely monitored as they want. Not even a message about the limiting the speed. If they can’t provide the proper speed and a reliable speed monitoring software the limiting should be done according to the values which customer aknowledged. I think poeple should be informated about this facking through paper articles also.

as it say they increased the promoting period more people get in to the troubble.

  • @sam,

so true, i have call few times and ask them the same, about my usage, they don’t seem to have a clue about what i was taking about, they are just saying “you have to wait till you bill is processed” what the hell ? then how can we know how much we have used and when our speeds will be reduced ?

  • Rishoban

As I said earlier, I came to colombo from Badulla, I am now in Borelesgamuwa, And i tested my speed here! Guess what?! ONLY 90KB/s!!!.
Even in Colombo, what should I do next? Call Dialog or wait? Sorry for the wrong post , I actually live near the 3G tower in Badulla (Only 1 or 2Km) and i get a speed of 1.2 – 1.9 Mbits/s in there.

  • @Rishoban

this is what i have been saying all this time, dialog is just fooling the customers, where they only have max of 1mbps but some times when there is no traffic it goes to 2mbps but that is if your near a less traffic base station.

yes, you should make a complain with dialog and follow it, they just close complain with out informing the customer, so you do need to follow up on it and ask them to re-open if they have fail to fix the issue.

You better make a complain with TRC. No point of making a complain with Dialog.

    Because

  • Rishoban

    @Kalinga
Yeah, you are correct, I am the one & only dialog HSDPA customer in my hometown.

@Dimuthu I don’t know how to do that?

  • Rishoban

Before making a complaint to TRCSL, i have 2 doubts, Will the Computer’s h/w confuguration affect the speed? (In my PC, I get 100KB – 300KB)
But, in Colombo I get only 90KB/s.

And I will go to Colombo again this time too. So, I will surely make a complaint to them this time, Because this is a new billing cycle, where the dialog can’t close the complaint saying FUP extension.

  • @Rishoban

well, about the HW con fig, they haven’t provided a minimum for Mobile Broadband, but its up to them to provide you with the proper information when buying, its not its not you can take it up with the consumer affairs as well since they’re miss leading the customer with out given proper information.

they do have a minimum H/W S/W for Broadband http://www.dialog.lk/en/broadband/faqs/index.html

you don’t have to worry about about little little things, the issue is if your in a so call HSDPA area, if your not getting the speeds they advertised from dialog to you (form a dialog web site – local bandwidth) you can take this up with TRC, always make the complains in written format since you need proof.

also try to recode any phone conversations you have with them (that’s what i do) always ask for who your speaking to (full name) since they always ask “who did you speak to”

  • Rishoban

Today, I saw a link to your page is placed in the Wikipedia by someone.
It is in the page that is about dialog 3g. Seems Kalinga’s Blog is becoming popular
in every where in the world.

  • Rishoban

I am now afraid of making a complaint to TRCSL, Will it create some problems?
Anyway, I tried the http://1.1.1.2/bmi/www.yahoo.com, I dint thin it is working faster. it is same as the other.
i have another problem, I tried to got to a web site, http://www.www.com,
it didn’t load in my hsdpa, while it worked in a internet cafe. can anyone visit that website with a dialog hsdpa?

  • @sanjan, web cache is some thing that used by ISP to reduce the usage of there international backbone to speed up web pages,

    Eq:

lets say there are 10 users accessing yahoo, we all know yahoo is not located in Sri Lanka, so all 10 uses need to use the international link to download the yahoo web page to your computer, but all are getting the same site. so what web cache does is when a use access a web page, it keep a copy of the page in the local server, in this case Dialog’s local server, and when a another user request the page it don’t go all the way to the yahoo server, it comes from the Dialogs local web cache, saving valuable international bandwidth and speeding up the web loading process.

  • @sanjan,

well this is not to stop 100% of the international bandwidth, just to reduce the duplicate traffic and even if you take web mail, only the text in the mail changes, apart from that 90% of the page is the same as every one else. so still the images, and other things can be cached.

  • @Rishoban

sorry about late reply, your comment was there in the SPAM 😀 only today i found it.

about the web cache, will not do much for the end user, it was just a test for you all to do 🙂 it will not peed up the connection since its already doing so.

http://www.www.com, will check that once i go home and will update you.

  • @Rishoban

yes your right, http://www.www.com is not working, from what im seeing they seem to be blocking the Dialogs IP

    @ kalinga
their own blog they say that they are advertising 7.2mbps because mobitel does that. they say mobitel M3 also has same speed. why dont they give free calls to land numbers as mobitel already does that? this company is very 3rd class. isnt it?

  • oke, Dialog seem to f**up the HSDPA network for Mobile Broadband today, not only me others seem be having the same issue, but when i use a normal SIM i can hit the same speeds as before but on there Unlimited Broadband connections the speeds are around 50kbps !!!!!!!!!! (yes yes i didn’t exceed my 5GB limit)

    @sanjan

not sure about the 7.2mbps, if they have a 7.2mbps network, then they should show download speeds from there server to us, but they even fail that… thats is what you call last mile speed, they may have the equipments but not the internal bandwidth !

about free calls to landlines, this case Mobitel has the upper hand since mobile is own by SLT, so where they have no cost factor there….

  • Rishoban

These days I have another issue, that is signal strength. In the past 2 days I get siganl strength upto 18 – 30%, even though I got upto 100% in the start.

    But, I get the same speed, 100KB/s – 180KB/s.

Is dialog owns that Blog? (www.dialogblogs.com)

  • sanjan

    kalinga
indi is the one says that they advertisid 7.2mbps just because mobitel advertised that speed. tomorrow tigo may also advertise 7.2mbps with out even having 3G!

  • prasan

I don’t know much about wireless broadband. But I can share my experience on SLT ADSL for my 2mbps connection @ Badulla.

for nearly 1.5 years, I’ve had no severe problems with this link. The internet speed tends to go down during afternoon and evenings but it’s bearable. (Usually > 1mbps). When you use multiple connections like p2p speeds close to 2mbps can be achieved.

Other thing I want to highlight is SLT network infrastructure is very consistent. My ADSL link will always connect to my university (or any other university, connected to LEARN network) @ 2mbps any time of the day. (pinging is around 15~25ms)
