  • ok now M3 (Mobitel Broadband – HSDPA) has come to a point where you cant even brows a page, the speeds has gone down, the pings time out all the time. this happens when they start to go via the lankacom links.

i have spoke to them few, time send them few speed test reports, nothing so far has been done.

here’s the reports and ping tests.

As they have mentioned, it will take another two weeks to sort out the issue. They pretended that they were totally unaware about the issue until Kalinga drew the attention. What a surprise!! Could be Mr. Amith Suranga is a new recruit.( I have been continuously complaining since last May about the problem)
This is usual way of catering broadband customers in Sri Lanka. Crafted stories were uttered to misguide the users in the country as a usual practice.
Having a good quality BB service in Sri Lanka is nightmare.
What they should do is, they should waver the rental for this period if they accept their QoS issue openly like this.
Most probably, it could be the overloaded cells due to large number of users and limited cells sites. There is no relationship in the backbone. (Whether its SLT or Lankacom)
It s another typical Sri Lankan broadband service.

  • Sanath Siriwardena,

no its not a network overloaded issue, from my test we found the packet lost happen in one of there internal gateways/routers.

since we did the test at the same time from multiple locations and the speed are the same.

  • Sanath Siriwardena

If immediate nodes starts to drop packets, you ACK from other routers could also affected. This is the reason you to see packet dropping in other nodes in the path. This is very basic and easy to understand but require same experience.
Take it like this- Say you have 3 nodes A,B and C. A represents your immediate node and “c” is the gateway. And there is another node middle node called “B”.
If A and B get congested due to local traffic, these nodes started to drop packets due to its congestion. If you do a ping under this situation your ACK packet coming inward from node “c” has to come through these congested nodes of B and A. So its return is disturbed. This delay ACK from node c is indicated as a packet drop (Time out RTT)
The other thing is gateway routers indicate pack drops due to congestion. The gateway congestion usually incorporated with inadequate bandwidth issues in related to International backbone segment. Hope you are well aware about the capacity of SLT and lankacom. There is no bandwidth issue in the International segment.
Say if they have any problem in the International segment as you have mentioned, opening up bandwidth will never take more than 5 minutes. (They don’t consume 2 weeks for this type of adjustments) Same, if they can locate bad nodes, they too can be replaced.
Remember, usually packet dropping mechanism is triggered with congestion. Congestion creates by the inadequate bandwidth.

  • Hi Sanath,

i think you miss the point, i was NOT taking about the international bandwidth, i was taking about the issue they have with the Router 🙂 the fault is a bad router dropping packets.

also see there reply from Mobitel

“Our engineering division has found the route cause with regard to your issue”

    also you say

“Hope you are well aware about the capacity of SLT and lankacom. ”

yeah but that has nothing do with Mobitel since its all depend on how much bandwidth either SLT or Lankacom is given to Mobitel.

“opening up bandwidth will never take more than 5 minutes.”

oh well, its not that simple, since bandwidth cost, some one have to pay for it, so even if Mobitel has an issue with there international bandwidth, its not that simple to open up more bandwidth if they don’t have it 🙂 cos they will always think about the cost.

“Say if they have any problem in the International segment as you have mentioned, ”

where i have mentioned that ?

  • Sanath Siriwardena

I’m having this problem since last May. This quality degradation was the reason me to ended up with your blog. (I did a search using “poor quality M3” and found your blog)
This is not a unique problem to me. And I should say, we did not have any complaints on M3 up to last May. Whenever I take speed issues with Dailog’s WiMax (I’m using Dialog’s 1Mbps WiMax since July 2007) I always ask Dialog to take examples from M3 service. During first six months they have done a wonderful job.
If we go through you blog, it shows us how Mobitel gave excuses in the past, even for your inquires-Network updates/SIM problems etc.,
So this is not a new problem and it was there for the whole three months. In some instances it recovered, but never last long. Rather the quality was never reached its previous standard. You also confirmed this in your comment (comment no: 36)
We all know that this is not a new problem popped out so suddenly.
And if it’s a router/node, it could be replaced overnight.
“oh well, its not that simple, since bandwidth cost, some one have to pay for it, so even if Mobitel has an issue with there international bandwidth, its not that simple to open up more bandwidth if they don’t have it cos they will always think about the cost”.
I take International bandwidth as an example to prove – if there is packet drop as you have mentioned, in one of their internal/gateway routers, the reason could be the lack of bandwidth.
As a general practice, gateway routes are configured with larger buffer size to accommodate the traffic to flow evenly through the node without causing any congestion. Therefore, gateways are 99% congestion free theoretically in a good network environment. With no or less contention ratio, its duty highly concentrates on BGP and not the controlling of traffic which lies outside its scope.
To be more precise, the closest reason to be the gateway to drop packets would be the lack of international bandwidth. (if the gateway is to blame)
When it comes to cost issues relating to the International bandwidth, actually we have to consider lots of things such as total customer base then and now.
    1. If Mobitel is really looking after its customers they have to open up the bandwidth according adding of new customers. Actually its not a business of ours, what we need is a good service for what we pay. Hope you also agree with me. If operator cannot cope with the growing number of customers like SLT, this could be a more serious than we ever thought of.
    2. On the top, the International bandwidth charges were slashed down by 80% since 2002.
(This is the reason Sri Lankan ISP’s to acquire Gbps International bandwidths)

    • yeah but that has nothing do with Mobitel since its all depend on how much bandwidth either SLT or Lankacom is given to Mobitel.
No. SLT or Lankacom never give badwidth to Mobitel on their own. Mobitel can obtain bandwidth ( even 622Mbps channels)according to their requirements. It is the sole duty of the Mobitel to acquire enough bandwidth periodically to facilitate its growing number of customers. For not acquiring enough bandwith (there is no such problem and even if they have similar issue, they can upgrade Intl bandwidth within 5 minutes if Mobitel really cares its customers)

I hope you never misunderstood my example( 5 minutes) 5 minutes example taken to show how easy and cheap the international bandwidth is.

Say if they have any problem in the International segment as you have mentioned

    • where i have mentioned that ?

We are not arguing I hope. – Gateway routes rarely drop packets under the normal network condition. I have already explained this. And you said you have noticed discarded packets (my test we found the packet lost happen in one of there internal gateways/routers) somewhere in the gateway. Your observation report valid under these conditions:
    1. Gateway router problem – could be replaced overnight/ SLT is having 4 gateway routes and all 4 in good operational condition (24.07.2008) if one fails, traffic automatically diverts via other 3 gateway routers.
    2. Lack of International bandwidth – Mobitel could acquire a new capacity without any problem with proportionate to its new users.

My question is, why take 3 months? Or even two weeks?

Not only you and me, we all suffer due to these malaises in the broadband services in Sri Lanka. SLT, Mobitel and Dialog all do the same business.
    What we should do?
Speak the truth also by educating others. Never let operators to fool the users with misleading answers.

My apologies for taking your space. But we mustn’t allow operators to mislead our innocent users.
And don’t forget I’m still using my M3 and I pay 1,500 monthly. So I think I have entitled to get proper broadband service for what I pay.
Now my download speed is indicated as 67kbps in M3. (24.07.2008 Time 23.07)

  • hi Sanath,

i do agree with what your saying, but as they say this is a “router” issue, let wait and see for 2 weeks, and yes the issue was there since may, thats why i wrote this blog, and i do know the Mobitel customer service take you around the bush and give you million things saying nothing is wrong.

i was on hold for more then 20min at times just to talk with them, even when i do i end up taking with a smart mouth idiot who don’t understand Kbs to kpps. so i know how this ppl treat customers.

also what i always say is M3 cant say this is shard since we pay for the bandwidth use use unlink ADSL.

other sad thing is in sri lanka customers dont really know to demand for good service or quality. they just ignore and wait to see if this will be ok, or some idiots end up defending the service provider saying is good, mine work fine.

so its really difficult in SL to work on things like this.

i had to fight for 3 months just to get them to say there is some ting wrong.

all and all TRC is to blam where they dont have any proper rules/regulation about BB quality (QoS) etc, and they hardly act up on things.

once i had an issue with Dialog where i live, the tower was almost 175% over loaded, and had to fight with them for 1 years to get this fixed. at that time i was on GPRS.

yes i feel the pain 🙂

  • Sanath Siriwardena

Yes the biggest problem we are facing is the consumer unawareness. This is the loose point all operators enjoy. No customer resistance at all. This situation could be avoided by educating users about standards of broadband.
    Keep it up.

  • Gihan

First i sholud thank kalinga for strating of this blog, this is the first time that i hav wrtting to this,
I exp last two days there was a big problem or some king of system upgration was done in mobitel. after yesterday internet was very fast, havent u all experiance that.

  • well, yesterday and day before yesterday (26th and 27th of July) Mobitel was switching between SLT and Lankacom links but as soon as they go with Lankacom the speed went down, from yesterday night, they are going via SLT, yes speed are much better now, the issue seem to be with Lankacom links.

not bad at all, the link is SLT

  • Nalaka Kodigamuwa

Hi I found this blog when I googled for Mobitel M3. I had a bad experience with Dialog 2 weeks ao when I went I walked into their Darley road office to enquire about a Broadband connection. The service I obtained from this place was appaling as the girl who served me didn’t have any care in the world and continued to give me basic details available on their brochure and then began talking to her friends over the counter. She seemed to not take me seriously I guess as I the way I was attired was in a pair of rubber slippers.. Tell me does service have to be this bad in the country.. I think atleast Dialog must see this on public blog to learn from the harsh realities that Sri Lankan consumers are now very powerful and do not get fooled anymore by fancy promises.

  • Nalaka,

welcome to the world of customer service in Sri Lanka. not only you i have had the kind a experience with Dialog, Mobitel, Lankabell etc. all over the world, all the company’s has a saying “Customers is always right” but in Sri Lanka, “Customer is always wrong” 😀 and when you travel around the world, you can see how they treat the customer, as a King ! but in Sri Lanka, customer is a pain to them.

well this is just the attitude of the customer care personal, as most of them has there head on the sealing (cant say the a** word 😉 )! to them the customer is a person who annoy them and they have no intention of doing any thing to help them. this is just an attitude problem.

one thing i found is, if the customer care person is treating you bad, just yell at them, that always work 😀

anyway, in Sri Lanka the customer are really miss educated and non demand making this bad for few people to fight for. customer must demand for there rights and fright for it.

  • today i got a call from an Engineer at Mobitel who is responsible for the HSDPA – M3 network, and he assured me that they are working on the matter and they are not just ignoring and that this blog has given them so many feed backs from the customers. and they are planing to improve the system, and to prevent this kind a issues happening in the future.

  • sad but I’m about to say Bye Bye to M3, hope it will be for good, I’m going with the new Dialogs Unlimited Broadband Package, i just got a new data connection from dialog, the cost is Rs.1000 for the SIM and Rs.3000 for a refundable deposit, for Rs.2999 (+ VAT + MSL) I’m getting 5GB @ 7.2mbps (most likely less then 800kbps) and after 5GB the speed will go down to 384kbps (3G Speeds) but if i pass the 6GB limit the speed will come down to 64kbps, but the good part is i can pay Rs.100 per day after reaching the 5GB limit and keep on paying till my next bill Rs100 and keep the HSDPA speeds.

still cant say much about the service and speed, will update you after 1 month or so usage.

    (1) M3
    (2) Dialog WiMax
    (3) Dialog Unlimited Broadband

    Kalinga,
i am very happy to see your blog and i am really like to know about these fields.I gain more from your blog.I am not BB user using dial up and still a student. I would like to ask you something Please open a new blog regarding slt peotv vs Dialog satellite tv. and Mobitel upahara vs Dialog blaster

    i really appreciate your blog.

  • Rasike

i am a student and after going through all the info on the web as well as this blog on M3 vs Dialog Broadband i opted to get myself a M3 connection, according to my view the main drawback about M3 is the extremely high cost of their USB modems and in this regard Dialog has a distinctive advantage bcos they retail around 10,000/- the E220 modem (Locked, thats what they say in the w.site), while at Mobitel it is around 18,000/-(Unlocked), i was able to get my hands on a modem which is locked to certain network (guess what?? 😉 and unlock it by patching and flashing. workable methods are all over the web and its simply a question on following them accurately. I have not had any problems with my BB connection so far and didn’t see any noticeable problems since last month when i started initially, hope it stays that way, i have attached a copy of the Speedtest result i just got now, and im on the 250/- package, want to thank all you guys for starting and contributing to this blog, it had immensely helped ppl like me to get a good bargain when it comes to Mobile BB connections.

To access internet (M3 high speed) through 3G phone:

    1. What models of 3G phones (Built – in HSDPA facility) available in Sri Lanka for lowest price?

2.Is all 3G phones suitable for this task?

3.What are the devices (Modems, Date cards) uses to access internet (M3 high speed)
    for lowest price?

    Please reply me…..

  • Rasike

3.5G phones include Nokia n95,n82,n96, SE K850,K660,W910,W890,C902 ect. No idea about other brands, but nearly all over 30,000/- i guess. You can use 3G phones for internet
Access but speed is something around 300+ kbps, so will not be able to use the 3.5G service offered by the networks. 3G phones like SE K530 are around for sale for less than 15,000 or more.
All 3G phones are suitable for internet Access by connecting to a pc via cable or bluetooth. If its a 3.5G(HSDPA) phone speed is much faster. 1Mbps [m3] as opposed to 300 something Kbps when using a 3G phone. As for modems there are the e220 of huwawei and mf620 of Zte. Prices of most [email protected]’s
    and mobitel’s websites.

  • @Mahinda

speed depend on the type of phone and your connection.

say you have a 3G phone then you can go max of 386kbps, if you phone has HSDPA, then you can go at the speeds it support, check the phone specifications to see the speed.

i have a LG KU990, that support 3.6mbps, but that don’t mean you will get 3.6mbps

if you use Dialog (god help you) can get around 512kbps, if your lucky !! if you use Mobitel, you will get around 1mbps

  • Rasike

Yes, when comparing a 3G phone and modem, using modem is faster. If its a 3.5G phone then speed when compared to modem should be similar.

  • chami

  • @chami

  • dear kalinga..
Now whats happen to your problem is that correct..i mean can u get good speed now..
    …pls comment..( I’m working @ telecommunication company)
    kosa..

  • @kosala

well, during the day time rather off peak, speeds are OK, but this is where i live, but during the peak time its slower, around 300~400kbps, but better then dialog here.

cant say issues are not there, its there. use to be better during the last month or so, after the package price down and upahara, data the speeds has gone down a lot.

  • Wolf

Damn. im using ADSL… this connection is damn suck.ADSL speed is nt always good.i hate this. so im gonna buy m3 . but according 2 ur comments ,nw i m affraid 2 buy it . any way i hate dialog too. wat can i doo?????

  • @Wolf

this is due to a brake in the SE-ME-WE 4 cable, this should be fixed with in few days.

when getting an HSDPA, check with people around your are, thats the best way to see witch is best, since HSDPA quality depend on the area your on.

  • Wolf

So tell me whats the best net connection in sri lanka? when we talk about m3 according 2 u, its nt suit 4 me.dialog also same. im using adsl. but its speed is suck maximum speed is 0.05mb per sec. im currently using 512kb… but other packages r too expensive. so slt should thing about there customers …but m3 is speeder than this.. i think its average around 0.1mb per sec.so its enough 4 me. but u said that there r some connection droping (m3).. so is it true?

  • Erasmus

Hi, I am having many issues with Mobiltel M3 now. Download speeds at times are less than 10KBps. Are you observing similar performances ?
