I’ m having the same issue. When I first connected from Kandy…I was getting connected to WCDMA connectivity…but hardly get connected to that only GPRS…now its like ‘Barabage’ 🙁

  • Hi Chaminda,

for me the issues seem to be resolved now for the past few days, are you sure you still have the issue ?

Malintha also live in Kandy and he’s connection is also back to normal.

  • sanath.s

I have the same problem with Mobitel. It was ok up to mid May (I got my connection in last December) and collapsed. (like SLT’s ADSL service) And again it recovered last week and then dropped.
Reason you to get two different IP numbers-
Day time Mobitel is on SLT’s backbone. (ip starting 203) After 1800 they are switching to Lanka Com’s backbone (ip starting 116)
We have two different problems. SLT is controlling transfer speeds by applying high contention ratio. (man made bottleneck) But in SLT ADSL you will get at least 480kbps (any time) to SLTNET all the time. In 2Mbps you will get approx: 1.5Mbps.
Mobitel’s problem is bit complicated. It has nothing to do with International bandwidth. Most probably it could be the last mile.
Anyway, good work that you’ll have done by taking the issue with Mobitel.

  • im not sure about the 480kbps any time since we use 4 ADSL lines at peak times its around 200-400kbps some times it goes way down.

about Mobitel, for me its back to normal but from what i know its was a internal bandwidth issue (inter connectivity) its ok in col city limit but when your out of col you see this issues.

cant really compare SLT ADSL with M3 since i get 1Mbps ++ at any given time to USA and Europe with M3. so its better then ADSL; but the price. there is an issue there. but you get what you pay for right.

if you still have an issue sanath best would be to talk to them, not sure there will be any help with the customer service they have but you can try right ?

  • sanath.s

The problem is somewhat intermittent. Usually, I use it (Huawei E220) at my home in Col 5 and Col 8 area. It was ok for the last five months. (700kbps up) We can rule out climate conditions since we’ve managed to record 700kbps+ for more than five months. Actually this was popped up suddenly.
I agreed. Mobitel is far ahead of SLT ADSL.
Actually I have been using ADSL since 2003. And last year switched to Dialog WiMax 1Mbps service. Now using both Dialog and Mobitel. Dialog upgraded their network recently and now maintaining 700kbps+ in 1Mbps service. (irrespectively day & night) But no predictions can be given specially, Sri Lanka’s broadband services and its future.
Bell broadband is cheaper to SLT and Dialog. But I have no idea about its speeds yet.

  • sanath, better you call mobitel and check, i use the same, E220, did test this at col 1 and where i live, i get service some where from moratuwa, only 1 signal bar, but work for, since i was home for the past 4 days, didn’t notice much of a deference.

i really don’t like to talk about bell, since had so many shit issues with them. they don’t have good international bandwidth at all, (sat and around 10mbps or less) and no tech guys to talk to, so better to stay away…

i just did a test with my m3, in col1 its 1mbps ++ with SLT IP.

    i use to have there 3.6mbps that hit 2.5mbps ++ those days…

  • sanath.s

Sorry I forgot to tell you, in my first comment the speeds I have mentioned 400kbps and 1.5Mbps are to SLTNET web site 24×7. Say if you download Eudora, you will get max blast. This example is to show how SLT controls its international bandwidth.

  • yes, thats right, they don’t have any issues with there last mile connectivity. there is one this for your e220 i can say, did you update it to the latest software ? where it support 7.2mbps

  • sanath.s

Thanks. I have upgraded the firmware but no luck. Then I changed it back to old firmware because, I did not find volume reset feature in it.
Can you check your speed with these sites?
    _http://performance.chello.at:81/ Site in Austria
    _http://lg.nexlinx.net.pk/ Pakistan
    _http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/ USA
If you have time, please repeat it for couple of times.
Kaliga, my problem is intermittent. Sometimes it work and in next second it wont ( like 800kbps in first attempt and 300kbps in second attempt) And consistence was not there.

  • sanath.s

Kalinga, I have been using these sites for more than five years
Normally, we never depended on a single site and we monitor using several sites from USA,Europe to Far East. Then we take an average. We are doing this to eliminate possible server problems (very rare) and link problems such as congestions.
Before I take readings, I usually monitor their POP’s using BGP. We are doing this again to eliminate errors in final result.
Example: Say we have an average of 800kbps 4 out of 5, we cross check the location of the slowest, and ISP’s POP relationship. Because, if ISP is not having a POP in close proximity, this can create some problems (this is not true always) but we are doing all possible things to maintain the reliability of the test.
Mostly we are using sites with above (atleast) .5MB test file. This is to avoid “slow start algorithm” effect in TCP/IP. In some instances, we’ve used 5MB files and we monitored the consistency of the incoming data stream.
We prefer to use ftp/http based tests and minimize the use of flash based test services specially sites with small size test files below .5MB.
And we do trace route to test servers to identify the path in relation to ISP/POP.
Addition to these tests, we test video streams and file downloading test using other servers.
Finally, we are carrying out same method using other ISP services.( SLT,Dialog and Mobitel) in the future we are planning to add Lanka bell and TV Lanka’s broadband services for the test.
We have conducted speed tests using SLT ADSL services in 2006 under the guidance of TRCSL. Twice we did this at TRCSL and engineers from SLT SLT ADSL service (Mr.Priyanka Undugodage- HD ADSL and Mr.Mahinda Herath-HD Regulatory matters) were also participated. The sites I have proposed yesterday were among the sites that we used in this exercise.
Test server location SLT Dailog Mobitel Mobitel in last April
    Austria 87kbps 867kbps 118kbps 881kbps
    Pakistan 119kbps 568kbps 87kbps 580kbps
    USA 94kbps 995kbps 54kbps 930kbps
Time of the test 1300 Date: 28.05.2008
Let’s hope Mobitel will take necessary steps to restore its service in the future. Actually, present quality is somewhat ok comparing to what we have last month.
Kalinga, If I continue, it will jeopardize the concept of your web site. If you, feel ok I can continue or I can use your e-mail

  • Gihan

I think m3 is more faster than dialog 3G and ADSL i can download torrent using M3 more Faster .
I experianced this low speed issue ~2 weeks ago , but i feel now it is ok.

  • Hi sanath,

no issue, we can talk about this, even i want to get this SLT and other ISP’s on the track with the ADSL quality.

if you need servers for testing, i have few in Europe, (France and Netherlands), USA and Singapore; all run 100mbps apart from the SG one thats on a 10mbps; all of them are multi homed networks.

we can open a new post and put our test results in the post, what do you think ?

  • Saranga

    Hi sanath,
Are you referring Mobitel GPRS 2G data speed or 3G data speed? If you are referring 3G, definitely your connection has some issue. It is better to contact Mobitel and check it before come to any conclusion about speed. I never experience this much of low speed with my mobitel 3G connections.

  • Saranga

    Dear kalinga,
I experienced speed issue before two weeks(roughly) as lot of uses experienced. But now it seems there is no issue.I can get better speed.however i can experience around 300kbps to 400kbps for short peried(Not frequently). I guess this may due to signal strength variation.

  • Saranga

    Hi sanath,
you can try following famous links and check the download speed .you will experience high download speeds though your testing tools show low speed . I have experienced differnent download speeds when i check with speed test tools,CNN video and youtube parallaly.

i.e,speed test tool shows around 150kbps,CNN video download video with 1.5 Mbps and youtube download with 200kbps.(these are only rough values)

    http://www.cnn.com/video/
    or
    http://www.youtube.com/

  • sanath.s

Yes Kalinga, go ahead and start a new post. We can share our experiences in the future.
I have (actually I had) good contacts with SLT engineers. Specially decision making people. And I have good contacts with Dialog too. I always give my technical feed back to them and also constantly keeping the pressure on them. But I have no contacts with Mobitel.
Kalinga, I always did my best by taking issues with the technical staff. Because, customer care offices are helpless and on the top their knowledge is not that good. And nothing will happen at the end.
I made a complaint to TRCSL in 2003 regarding poor service of SLT ADSL. There was an inquiry and all SLT officials and engineers were invited. (in 2006) We did three rounds of speeds tests (from 10 am to 4pm for 3 days) using Home express (512kbps) and office express (2Mbps). And we’ve ended up with very poor speeds. But knowing the truth, TRCSL is still holding its decision.
I keep this until we all get good broadband service (above 700kbps) at affordable price where all Sri Lankan will have the access to the Internet.

Saranga; I’m referring to HSPA 3G

  • Hi,

thats good to know… will start one in my English blog.

im setting up my own download speed test servers, so we can be sure about the server side and bandwidth of the ISP

    will keep in touch.

  • Ranga

Hi I had a issue with Mobitel recently, interms of their SIM card. I never knew it until a courier tunred up with a new sim card. The letter stated that due to a techincal upgrade was carried out and they identified that my sim card was redundant and that theu had replaced it.. they also went unto give me 50% dciount on my rental as well.. now thats great service for me.. Did anyone else experience this????

  • Ranga

Hi Kanlinga, I spoke to customer service the reason they had done is due to some techincal upgrade… Well problem now sorted I am happy.. Well the best part is I did not have difficulties getting though to their customer service line.. since my Contact number is priortised .. whenever I call their hotline.. which means I only have to stay on line for a not more that 60 seconds to speak to an agent… I think if Supun can give his contact number to Mobitel they will put him in their priority list.. I think they do it will all their M3 internet customers…

  • Hi Ranga,

seems your the only one getting this kind a support and service 😀 good to know that even one is getting a good service.

not only him even i had the same issues with customers service, its ok even if they dont answer with in 20min but the customer service (most of them) dont have a clue about the technical things. so its kind a hard to get them to understand what we are taking about.

anyway… this is not only with Mobitel, Dialog and other providers has the same issue with this.

  • well, cant say much about Lankabell wimax since have not experienced it my self, but i had lot of experienced with bell with dialup on WLL and CDMA, both sucks big time including the tech support, still not sure how good lankabell wimax will be since lankabell don’t really have much international bandwidth at all, even now they run on SAT, less then 10mbps i guess, so that cant be that much reliable unless they go with fiber and has 60Mbps +++;

  • Suranga,

looks good, whats the package you have ? also the time you did the speed tests ? where do you live ?

but to USA speeds are really slow, even on my 1bmps i use to get 1mbps, on your its less then 512k, from what i see you have this 3.6mbps connection.

  • saranga

From speedtest software I can get different speeds if I check several times. I think this is due to shared bandwidth which is used in mobile technology and internet side congestion. However we cannot expect always high values. Hope we can always get more than 1mbps soon

  • well suranga, in your case the uplink limitation is 384kbps, that was set by mobitel. then it cant be more then that what ever the case, can be less but not more, unless mobitel dont have a uplink speed limit in place.

about the shared bandwidth, not all internet services are shared, but most broadband connection are shared bandwidth, like SLT ADSL, but those don’t have a download or usage limitations, but for M3 we pay per MB, they cant say this is shared since we pay for each MB we use, if we need a sucky shared service we can always get a SLT ADSL or etc, where its cheap and unlimited, we get M3 and pay for each MB we use as we need a better service. same as ADSL vs Lease Lines.

  • saranga

Yes kalinga. I agree with you. We need better service. But shared bandwidth is technology dependent and 3G also use this technology. (I am not talking about internet side) If there are several users in my cell, definitely I will get shared radio link with other users.

  • cell is a tower that can service “X” number of users, so each cell/tower has a limitation of radio channels its has, so if the “A” cell can support “X” number of users and if that cell exceed the “X” number of users, then the cell/tower get over loaded. thus slow data rates, this is not only for Data, this is also the same for voice. if on a given area the cell/tower is over loaded then the provider must reduce the size or the cell coverage and add more cells/towers to cover the ares reducing the load on each cell/tower.

so you can see this is NOT some thing that is NOT fixable, its the basics on Cellular communication. that’s why you call them “cell” phone.

the tower interconnection or internal bandwidth can be an issue where each tower/cell is interconnected with the base or main switching station with either radio or fiber, in this case they need to increase the inter connectivity bandwidth.

so you can see nothing is impossible, its just that providers just try to expand users with out expanding there network, like whats happening with dialog.

  • kasun

ok i’m asking the same thing that a couple of people have already asked but what about bell wimax? i can’t seem to find anything related to it(probably because its new sadly for me) but anyways their international gateway problem is solved now right? can someone pls point me in a direction all i want to know is if the said speed is there and if there’s a pseudo download limit, which is the case with dialog.

  • i cant say much about dialog wimax but lankabell i know the speeds are not that much good and the ping levels stay 500ms ++ so from what we see its still goes via satellites witch sucks due to high delays and speeds, lankabell don’t have that good reputation when it comes it internet services.

  • kasun

all that bandwidth and they aren’t using it:O they do have a 1Tb+ submarine cable don’t they.i mean if we take the numbers they should be really good if not the best(going by international bandwidth alone)
Anyways dialog seem to be working pretty well till you hit the download limit, then the speeds start to drop.atleast thats what i’ve been hearing.oh btw jst for laughs pinging results of dialog gprs:P

  • oh well, 1Tb ++ link is own and run by SLT, but Mobitel dont have the access of this, mobitel has only a limited amount of bandwidth.

the issue seem to be back with M3 once more, and we are doing a speed test and going to forward this to Mobitel soon.
