DIY 1TB Network Attached Storage inside a UPS!
මේ දවසවල මගේ පරණ NAS (Network Attached Storage) එක වෙනුවට NAS Box එකක් ගන්න කියලා හිතුනා, මොකද තියේන්නේ අලි යෙක් වගේ computer එකක්. එකක් ගන්න ඉතින් ලංකාවේ හෙවිවා හෙවිවා නෑ, ඉතින් ඔහොම ඉන්නකොට bud දවසක් මට twitter එකේ කිවුවා එක තැනක තියනවා කියලා. එතන තිබුනා Synology කියන සමාගෙමෙන් හදන 209J කියන මාදිලියේ එකක්, මිල රු.39,000 ක්, මේ කියනේ hard disk නැතුව. මෙචර ගානක් දීලා මේක ගන්න එක කිසිම තේරුමක් නෑ කියලා සිතුනා.
ඔහොම හිතනකොට ආවා අදහස්ක් මගේ පරණ UPS එකක් තිබුනා, මේක ඇතුලේ NAS එකක් හදාගන්න පුරුවන්නම් මරු නේද කියලා. මොකද නියම සයිස් එක නේ, වැඩි ඉඩක් යන්නේ නෑ නේ.
නොදන්න අයට බලමු මොකද මේ NAS නොහොත් Network Attached Storage එකක් කියන්නේ කියලා, මේක හරියට Network (LAN) එකට හයි කරපු hard disk එකක් වගේ, ඕනෑම පරිගණකය සිට සම්බන්දවෙලා දත්ත copy කරන්න share කරන්න පුලුවන්. File Server එකක් වගේ, ඒත් file server කියන්නේ ටිකක් hardware ඕන, වැඩි ඉඩක් යන දේවල් නේ. NAS වල file sharing විතරක් නොවෙයි, Audio/Video Streaming කරන්න, backup කරන්න වගේම මේ හදපු එකේ Torrent උතන් download වෙන්න දාන්න පුලුවන්. ;) විදුලිය වැඩිය යන්නෙත් නෑ නේ!
මේවගේ වටිනාකම තමයි, අඩු විදුලියක් වැය වීම, රත්වීම අඩුවීම, boot වෙන්න ගතවෙන කාලය අඩුවීම, අඩු ඉඩ ප්රමාණයක් යන එක, maintenance ගොඩක් අඩු වීම වගේ දේවල් තියනවා.
මම මේ NAS එක හදන්න 1.2KV UPS එකක් හා Intel Atom 1.6 Mini-ITX motherboard එකක් (රු.7500), 512MB RAM (රු.1500) එකක්, ATX 250W Power Supply (රු.1500) එකක් 1GB USB Pen Drive (රු.1250) එකක් (පසුව මේක CF වලට මාරු කරනව) හා 1TB hard disk (රු.12,500×2) දෙක්කක් යොදාගත්තා.
මෙන්න තියනවා UPS එක, මේකේ ඔක්කොම කෑලී ගලවා ඉවත් කරා. සුද්ද කරා. 
පොඩිඩක් යකට කෑලී එක්ක ඔට්ටු වෙලා, කැපීමකින් පසුව Hard Disk දෙක දෙපැත්තට mount කරා, පොඩි අලයක් උනේ Mini-ITX motherboard එක සවි කරන්න ගියහම, මේකට හේතුව උනේ motherboard එක පොඩක් උස වැඩියි, ඒක නිසා ඒකට පොඩි bracket හදලා පොඩ්ඩක් ඇල කරලා සවි කරන්න සිදු උනා.
UPS එකේ තිබුනා network protection එකක්, ඒකේ RJ45 jack එක වගේම FAN, Power Input එහම තියලා වයර් ගලවලා හරියට සවි කරා, ATX Power Supply එකත් ගලවන්න උනා, ගලවල මදේ විතරක් ගානට FAN එක එන විදියට සවිකරා, මතක තියාගන්න power supply එක සෙල්ලම් කරන එක අනතුරු දායකයි.
ඔන්න ඔකොම සවිකිරීමෙන් පසුව, RJ45 cable එකක් කපලා එක කොනක් UPS එකේ තිබුන network පොර්ට් එකට solder කරලා අන්ත් පැත්ත motherboard එකේ RJ54 (Network port) එකට සවි කරා.
NAS එකේ OS එක සදහා මම යොදාගත්තේ FreeNAS කියන FreeBSD වලින් පැවත් එක එකක්, මේක based වෙලා තියෙන්නේ mOnOwall කියන එක අනුව. FreeBSD කියන්නේ ලිනක්ස් නම් නොවෙයි, ඒක Unix වලින් පැවත එන එකක්. Open Source නම් තමයි.
දැනට Hard Disk දෙකක් යොදාගන්නේ RAID කිරීම සදහා, ඒ කියන්නේ RAID-1 පලමු hard disk එක වගේම එකක් දෙවන hard disk එකේ හැදෙනවා, ඒ කියන්නේ දෙකම 100% දත්ත වලින් සමාණයි. මේසදහා මම FreeNAS වල එන SoftwareRAID එක තමයි යොදාගත්තේ. මතක තියාගන්න මම 1TB hard disk දෙකක් යොඅදාගත්තට දාරිතාව වන්නේ 1TBම තමයි, මොකද RAID (Mirror) වෙන නිසා. FreeNAS boot කරනේ නම් USB Pen එක හරහා, මේක කරන්නේ ඉක්මනට boot වෙන්න හා පහසු නිසා, FreeNAS සදහා හොදටම 64mb ඉඩක් ඇති. මේ සදහා keyboard, monitors කිසි දෙයක් ඕනේ නෑ, Install කරන්න විතරයි ඕනේ.
මෙන්න FreeNAS boot වෙනවා.
මෙන්න මගේ UPS ඇතුලේ දුවන NAS එක ඉදිරි පැනල් එකේ LED හා Power Button එහම හරියට වයර් කරා motherboard එකට, පිටුසට USB Port එකකුත් සවි කරා.
මොනවද මේකේ තියන පහසු කම්….
RAID-1
මේකෙන් දත්ත සුරැකිව hard disk බිද වැටීමකින් ආරාක්ෂාවෙන්නෙ පුලුවන්.
SMB/Windows File Sharing, FTP, AFP, NFS
Windows, Linux හා MAC එක්ක File Share කිරීම.
Web Server with PHP
PHP/Apache Web Server එකක්.
DAAP/UPnP (DLNA, PS3, Xbox 360)
NAS එකේ ඇති Audio/Video file ඕනෑම device එකක් සිට ඇසීමේ හැකියාව, copy නොකර iTunes, Winamp, PS3, Xbox 360 වගේ ඒවා එක්ක NAS එකේ ඇති play list පවා play කිරීමේ හැකියාව. මේක ගොඩක් පහසුයිනේ පරිගනක කිපයක් තියනකොට.
Torrent Download
මේක ගැන කියන්න දෙයක් නෑනේ, මේක ඉදන් torrent download කරන්න උවද පුලුවන්.
තව ගොඩක් දේවල් තියනවා.
රු.39000 + 25,000 යනවා කියපු එක, රු. 25,000 + 13,000 මුදලකින් සාදාගත්තා.

ඔලුව කැරකෙනවා ඇම්බර් පෙට්ටියක තරමක්වත් නැති UPS පෙට්ටියක් ඇතුලේ NAS එකක් සකසලා දැම්මැයි කිව්වාම. එතකොට රත් වීමේ ප්රශ්ණයක් නැද්ද?

රත්වීමේ ගැටලුවක් නෑ, මොකද Atom CPU එකට Fan එකක් වත් ඕනේ නෑ, විදුලිය බාවිතය 30w වගේ, ඉතින් 250w power supply එනෙක් බාගයක් වත් යන්නේ නැති නිසා රත්වෙන්නෙ නෑ, HDD උනත් මම spin-down කරලා run කරනේ. එක නිසා සවි කරලා තියන fan එක වැඩිත් එක්ක.

ඒකට ඇත්තටම HDD එක support කරන්න ඕනේ, උදාහරණයක් ගමු අපි 7200 RPM HDD එකක් ගත්තා කියලා, Spin-Down වලින් කරනේ මේකේ RPM එක අඩු කරන එක හෝ spin වෙන එක නවත්වන එක, ගොඩක් HDD වල සම්මත Power Profile තියන්වා, මෙයින් එකක sleet කරහම හරි. මේක power management වල තියනවා windows නම්, turn off hard disk after X minutes කියලා.

5 දාන්න HDD 4 රක් ඕනේ නේ, ඒක ඉතින් ගොඩක් වියදම් යන වැඩක්, අනික motherboard කේ SATA port 2 කයි තියෙනේ, එහම උනොත් RAID card එකක් දාන්න වෙනවා, ඉඩ මදිකමත් වගේ ගොඩක් දේවල් එනවානේ.

ආ ඔවුනෙ. HD 2 යි කියල දැක්කෙ දැන්.
මේකෙ තියා ගන්නෙ වැඩිය බරපතල DATA නෙවෙයිනම් RAID-0 දැම්මත් කමක් නැති වෙයි. RAID-1 නම් මට පෙන්නනම බැරි එකක්. Storage Space එකෙන් 1/2 ක් කනවනෙ

I’m try to make NAS on my old computer.I’ll be using 2 x SATA HDD. I have download free Nas image frm the freenas.org. (FreeNAS-i386-embedded-0.7RC1.4735.img) if i copy this file on USB and if i boot from USB is it able to boot and do the insllation?

IMG එක කියන්නේ disk image එකක්, ඒක tool එකක් යොදාගෙන write කරන්න ඕනේ. (linux නම් dd, windows නම් http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php) නමුත් මේක USB Size එක අනුවත් පොඩක් වෙනස් වෙනවා.
මම නම් recommend කරන විදිය තමයි ISO එක download කරලා, ඒක CD එකකට write කරලා. CD එකෙන් boot කරලා embedded system එකක් ලෙස install කරන එක.

CD 1ක ගැන තමයි මගෙ නම් අවිස්වාසය.DVD rom 1ක අලුත් SATA drive 1ක්.
ලින්ක් 1ක් දෙන්න පුලුවන්ද FreeNAS ISO 1ක Downලෝඩ් කර ගන්න.මම හිතන්නෙ මගෙ ISO 1ක හරියට වැඩ කැරන්නෙ නැහැ.හරියටම කොයි ISO 1කද බාගන්න ඕනෙ.

මේක intel.මමත් download කරේ ඕකම තමයි. ISO Recorder කියන software 1න් cd 1ක burn කර ගත්තෙ.මම හිතන්නෙ මේ වගේ වැඩ පුලුවන් කාලිංග අයියට විතරද කොහෙද?

can you have multiple HDDs connected and mapped as a single drive?
i’m looking around to buy a NAS … but seems pretty expensive. Your DIY NAS is pretty cool.

yes you can. just use RAID 1, that will add all drives as one. but if one fail, your out of luck, so use RAID5, you will not get all the drive spaces, but you will get more then 90% and you need 4 dives, you will get space of 3 drives

This can be made using even old Computer. But minimum RAM 256 else gives error when boot FreeNas.Power consumption may be higher.I used 700MZ AMD processor and 256RM and 3GB HDD for FreeNAS installation. Worked perfectly. Any way UPS concept is interesting.

is there a way to turn off this? Because this use Hard Disks which can be damaged by turning off the power directly. And i have another question; can i expand it’s capacity by using additional hard disks later

u can always press the power button, this will automatically power down the FreeNAS, also it will not damage the HDD since its a cold power off. even if the power fail, if there are NO data been witten at that them, no data will be damaged.
yes you can add any amount of HDD’s when your running out of space.

Thanks for the reply kalinga aiya, I was thinking to buy an 1TB external hard disk. But now i want to try this. My PC is having 3 hard disks so that i can remove 2 of them and attach to NAS. It will be an advantage if i able to set up the wireless network which is always in my mind.

I have few hard disks at home from my old comp. But they are already filled with data in NTFS file system. Can FreeNAS use NTFS disks without formatting?

Wireless is fine but if your copying lage files, it will take time, even on a new N type network.

RPM කියන්නේ (Revolutions per minute) විනාඩියකට කැරකෙන වට ගනන. මේ මෙකෙන් කියන්නා HDD එකක් ඇතුලේ තියන Data Plates කැරකෙන වේගය. මෙම වේගය වැඩි වෙනකොට දත්ත කියවන්න/ලියන්න යන කාලය අඩු වෙනවා. නමුත් ඒ එක්කම රස්නය, සද්ද, විදුලි පරිබෝජනය වගේ දේවල් වැඩි වෙනවා.

තව ප්රශ්ණයක් තියනවා. raid1 න් කරද්දි එක සමාන ධාරිතාව තියෙන HDD දෙකක් ඕනෙද නැත්තන් Different disk space තියෙන දෙකක් සම්බන්ධ කරන්න පුළුවන්ද? ආ තව hdd format කරන්න freenas එකෙන් පුලුවන්ද නැත්තන් අපි format කරන්න ඕනෙද? අපි කරනවානම් file system එක කොහොම දාලා format කරන්න ඕනෙද කියනවද (ඒ කියන්නෙ ntfs or fat32 නැත්තන් වෙනම එකක්ද කියලා). ගොඩක් ස්තූති වෙන්න ඕනෙ මේ වගේ එකක් කියලා දුන්නට. නැත්තන් අපි කොහෙන් මේවා දැන ගන්නද….

can. for RAID1 you dont need same size HDD’s but the max size of the RAID1 size will be the same as the smallest dive size you have.
you don’t have to format, you can use freenas web interface to do that. but freenas don’t support ntfs, fat32 supported but not recommended. use the recommended file system

කාලිංග අයිය. මමත් මේ වැඩේ කරන්නයි බැලුවෙ.NAS එකට පාවිච්චි කරන machine එක Dell Dimension 4100 ,1GHz, 256RAM,160GB IDE hard disk එකක් හයිකලා. network switch එකක් නැතිව crossover cable එකකින් connection එක හදාගන්න පුළුවන් වෙයිද.. “මේක ඉදන් torrent download කරන්න උවද පුලුවන්” කියන එකේ තේරුම මට පැහැදිලි නෑ

Really great work.
But I didnt get what you said as answer to the last question by “Nisanka”
We anyway have to keep this NAS pc power on right?
If we are going to access this wireless, we have to connect this to a wireless router through a Rj45 jack, right? is there any other way to share files other than using a switch/router?
Also need to know about the power on switches and how you soldered the RJ 45 to the UPS port. Since UPS might not have connector wires such as what we found in a computer cases(fromt side connectors), do you just connect the two wires coming from the power on button to the motherboard pins? for the rj45, you just cut the wire and soldered the small separate wires inside to the UPS rj 45 port?
(FYI – My electronic knowledge is very little)

if your using it, then yes
yeap,
use a direct cross cable from the NAS to your PC
that you need some knowledge in electronic, since you need to find witch pins on UPS connect to and make sure you dont short-out

ඒක ඉතින් වැඩිවෙන තරමට speed එක වැඩියි. ස්පීඩ් අඩුවන් file transfer වෙන්න යන කාලය වැඩියි.
